In today’s meeting, the University Council of the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich (LMU) chose nine Vice President. The university council followed the proposal list of the designated President Professor Matthias Tschöp unanimously. The LMU University Council consists of ten external members and ten members of the Academic Senate.
Four of the newly elected vice presidents of the LMU are responsible for various departments of the university and are responsible for research, teaching and appeals in their respective area. In addition, Professor Francesca Biagini is still responsible for the international area. All other vice presidents of the LMU are responsible for specific cross -sectional topics of the university. The vice presidents of the LMU are mainly working full -time. The six -year term of the new university management begins on October 1, 2025 and ends on September 30, 2031.

The vice presidents for the departments of the LMU
Prof. Dr. Benedikt Grothe has held the Chair of Neurobiology at the LMU since 2003. During this time he founded the master’s degree in Neurosciences, the Munich Center for Neurosciences – Brain and Mind, the Graduate School of Systemic Neurosciences and was a founding member of the Munich Competence Center Ethics. Grothe also headed a DFG special research area and is a member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and the Leopoldina and Chairman of various advisory boards in the national and international academic environment. In 2010, he received the Federal Cross of Merit for his diverse commitment to neurosciences.
Prof. Dr. Armin Nassehi has been the owner of the chair for general sociology and social theory at the LMU since 1998. Since 2023 he has been chairman of the Senate of the LMU and deputy chairman of the LMU University Council. He is a member of numerous committees such as the National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina and deputy chairman of the Bavarian Ethics Council and a member of the German Ethics Council. In addition to the immediate scientific work, Nassehi is also committed as a consultant for companies, politics and associations and operates active public science communication.
Prof. Dr. Francesca Biagini has been Vice President of International and Diversity of the LMU since 2019. Since 2009 she has held a chair for applied mathematics and headed the LMU’s mathematical institute for nine years. From 2020 to 2021 she was not only President of the Bachelier Finance Society, but also Secretary of the Siam Activity Group for Financial Mathematics and Engineering (2017 to 2019). Biagini was awarded the Princess Therese of Bavaria in 2019. Since 2019 she has been a member of various curatories of the Max Planck Society.
Prof. Dr. Carola Metzner-Nebelsick has been owner of the chair at the Institute for pre- and early history archeology and provincial Roman archeology since 2007. It leads various interdisciplinary research projects financed by third -party funds, among other things, is a member of the Academy of Sciences and Literature Mainz as well as a corresponding member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. It is also deputy chair of the central directorate of the German Archaeological Institute. Metzner-Nebelsick was also a member of the specialist college “Old Cultures” of the DFG and deputy speaker of the Antiquity Department in the Board of Trustees of the Austrian Science Fund.

Dr. Philipp Ewald Baaske Was CEO of the LMU spin-off nanotemper technologies by the end of 2024 and has been Executive Chairman in his supervisory board since then. The company is one of the global market leaders for biophysical measuring instruments. Baaske is alumnus of the Center for Nanoscience and cooperated with various LMU faculties, including the cluster for nucleic acid therapeutics Munich. Baaske is a member of various committees – for example in the Federal Economic Senate of the Federal Association of the Federal Association of Medium -sized Economy or in Advisory Boards of individual companies.
Prof. Julia dittrich is a digital expert and has more than 15 years of leadership experience from the free economy. She led large transformation projects in an international technology group and in digital start-ups. Since 2022, Dittrich has been a professor of e-commerce and digital business at the Chiemgau campus of the TH Rosenheim, where she, as a course manager and start-up officer, has been responsible for building an English-language course with a focus on digitization, entrepreneurship and future skills. Since 2024 she has also been a trusted lecturer of the Study Foundation of the German People at TH Rosenheim.
Prof. Dr. Joel chehn has held the chair for didactics of physics at the LMU’s Faculty of Physics since 2022. Previously, he worked as a teacher in Rhineland-Palatinate and finally headed the didactics working group of physics at the TU Kaiserslautern as a university professor. Since 2016 he has also been a scientific director of the quality offensive for teacher training (QLB) and has been driving the Immersive Quantified Learning Lab (IQL) at the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) as a “classroom of the future” since 2018. Kuhn is already involved in various interdisciplinary initiatives – such as the Collaborative Research Center for Personalized and Simulation -based learning Sharp or the LMU Excellence Cluster Origins and MCQST.
Beatrice Lugger Is science journalist and expert in science communication. Lugger was the managing director of the National Institute for Science Communication (Nawik) in 2015 to 2024, which she has built up as a deputy scientific director since 2012. She is a graduate chemist and trained science journalist. As an expert in science communication, she works in various committees – among other things as a Steering Committee the #Factorywisskomm of the BMFTR or as a advisory board of the AHA Scicomm Hub Bayern. Lugger, as an expert in the position paper, has participated in the science communication of the Science Council.
Dr. Christoph Mülke has been in office since 2010. He had been in various functions for the Science Council in Cologne since 1999, as a personal advisor of the chairman and the Secretary General and as deputy head of the presentation, studies, teaching and young scientists. In 2005 he initially moved to the LMU as head of the strategy and development department. From 2022 to 2024, Mülke was a spokesman for the Chancellor of the Bavarian universities and a member of the speaking group of the nationwide association of university chancellors. In addition, he is active on the board of the Society for Academic Study Preparation and Test Development and as a representative of the German universities in the General Assembly of Heads of University Management & Administration Network in Europe.
Dr. Margit Weber has been intensively integrated into university policy for almost two decades and has been the university women’s representative of the LMU since 2006. For her teaching performance at LMU, she was awarded the award for good teaching in 2002. She was a spokeswoman for the state conference of the women’s and equal opportunities officers at Bavarian universities. In 2008, with her commitment, a Bavarian program for realizing equal opportunities for women in research and teaching was provided. Weber’s LMU internal services such as her university policy engagement entered her various awards, in particular the Prize Pro Meritis Scientiae et Litterarum and the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon.
