New study shows: Social media enriches romantic relationships!

Tier (ots) According to current studies, modern love relationships are influenced by social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and TikTok. Current knowledge: Social media can have a negative impact on relationships, particularly by stoking emotions such as envy and jealousy.

Because on Instagram and the like, influencers and private individuals give their followers a refined insight into their lives and relationships. Users can use this as an opportunity to measure the quality of their own relationship and their partner’s behavior based on social media content.

The new study “The influence of social media on relationships” by Philipp Armin Krämer from 2024 now reveals: Social media can not only negatively influence love relationships, but also enrich them. Based on a survey with 100 participants, Krämer examined the role of social media on the creation and maintenance of love relationships Among other things, the author addresses the question of the extent to which social media influences the planning and implementation of joint activities in romantic relationships.

The result: While younger participants struggle more with envy and digital jealousy, the study participants aged 20 and over rate social media predominantly positively. According to their own statements, they use social media, for example, to gather inspiration for joint activities, but also to receive relationship tips or find topics for conversation. 30 percent of study participants use social media to share common experiences with other users and strengthen bonds. According to their own statements, 73 percent of those surveyed were inspired by the content to do new couple activities. Krämer also notes positive effects on the search for a partner: 70 percent say that social media makes it easier to get to know new potential partners.

The special feature: The sample provides an initial indication that users of social media sometimes evaluate the influence of the platforms positively – older users in particular rarely allow their relationships to be negatively influenced by social media.

The study suggests that social media can promote relationship satisfaction and stability of the partnership, inspire exchange and strengthen trust in the partner. Older study participants rate the influence of the platforms on their relationship life more positively than the younger respondents: While social media is largely an enrichment for them, younger users are more often faced with challenges such as jealousy and unrealistic expectations.
