New management of the Theater Museum appointed from July 1, 2024

Vienna (OTS) The KHM Museum Association is pleased to announce that Franz Pichorner will become the new scientific director of the Theatermuseum on July 1st.

The management of the KHM Museum Association followed the recommendation of the jury made up of external members and chaired by Jonathan Fine. After a multi-stage process and a public tender, the cultural historian Franz Pichorner emerged as the most suitable candidate for the management of the Theater Museum.

Franz Pichorner, a historian with a doctorate, has been working in various management positions in the KHM Museum Association for 26 years.

Since 1998, the experienced museum expert has accompanied numerous projects in the General Directorate, from the transition of the museums to full legal capacity, the integration of the World Museum and Theater Museum into the KHM Museum Association and the structural renovation of the Kunstkammer and the World Museum. He managed international exhibition projects in Japan, Korea and the USA and is responsible for numerous publications throughout the museum association.

Pichorner has been deputy to General Director Sabine Haag since 2010. Pichorner has been heading the theater museum on an interim basis since January 2024.

Franz Pichorner will contribute his extensive experience to the repositioning of the Theater Museum, which will be made possible by taking over the premises of the former Wolfrum Gallery and by renovating the Augustinerstrasse area. In addition to a second entrance and new reception area, a better visitor and exhibition experience, a new presentation of Klimt’s painting “Nuda Veritas” and a large space for the theater museum’s educational and event activities will be created. An area for restaurants and a museum shop will make the visitor experience more attractive.

Before the renovation, the large exhibition “Celebrating Johann Strauss” on the composer’s 200th birthday will be opened in the Theater Museum at the beginning of December 2024, which is being created in cooperation with the Vienna Library in the town hall and will mark the start of the Strauss Year 2025.

I am looking forward to this exciting task, which I will be able to carry out over the next few years with an excellent team at the Theater Museum and with colleagues in the Museum Association. My goal is to present the Palais Lobkowitz as a lively placesaid Franz Pichorner about his order.

General Director Sabine Haag is pleased about the appointment of the new scientific director at the Theater Museum: I am pleased about the appointment of Franz Pichorner as director of the Theater Museum. His knowledge of the KHM museum association and the management of numerous internal and external projects and exhibitions qualify him as an excellent museum expert.

Franz Pichorner was able to convince the jury with his strategic ideas for further opening up the Theater Museum to the audience in Vienna and also in the federal states. With him, an experienced museum person will take over the scientific management of the Palais Lobkowitz in this crucial phase of the renovation“, said Jonathan Fine, the designated general director of the KHM Museum Association, on the appointment of the new director of the Theater Museum.
