New green for Penzing and Hernals: Viennese forests are thriving | City of Vienna

The first “mini-forest” started in the 5th district in 2022, and since then new locations have been added all the time: Last autumn, the first Viennese forests were planted in Hernals and Penzing, and they have now developed into small green oases, according to a local report from Climate City Councilor Jürgen Czernohorszky shows.

In Penzing, the area of Linzer Strasse and the corner of Molischgasse was “reforested” together with students – and it was very successful: Field maples, winter linden trees, downy oaks, hawthorns and hop beech trees were planted, among others: “Penzing is a green district, but also has many dense areas Built-up areas – especially here, more greenery has a positive effect on the microclimate and offers people an intensive nature experience right on their doorstep.”

“Especially in densely built-up areas, any form of cooling is important and welcome. But the Viennese forest is something very special: the many different tree and shrub seedlings not only have a cooling effect in the long term, but also promote biodiversity in the city,” emphasizes district leader Michaela Schüchner.

A grove for Hernals

Planting was also carried out diligently in Hernals in the Halirschgasse-Dittersdorfgasse area: „“The little forest here has also developed splendidly,” says the Climate City Councilor happily. “We consciously choose locations in the districts that particularly benefit from the new greenery.”

Deputy district head Elisabeth Mössmer-Cattalini: “It is very nice to see how our Viennese forest is slowly but surely developing into a magnificent mini-forest. Where a few years ago there was an asphalted area on Gilmgasse and where cars drove, a new green living space is now growing, which is improving the neighborhood in the area around the Hernals rescue station.”

This is the Vienna Woods

A Viennese forest is a very dense and fast-growing mini-forest with a variety of different trees and bushes that are planted densely. Due to their small size of 100 to 230m² and their rapid growth, these groves are particularly suitable for small areas in densely built-up areas, but also for parking areas or squares. The forest is moving closer to the city center, species diversity and biodiversity can be experienced directly. Even after a few years, the mini-forests reduce the temperature of the immediate surroundings through evaporative cooling.

There are currently five Viennese forests throughout Vienna:

5th/12th, Stefan Weber Park: vs. Gaudenzdorfer belt 33
14., Molischgasse Park: opposite. Molischgasse 13
17., Halirschgasse/Dittersdorfgasse/Gilmgasse: ggü. Halirschgasse 15
20., Hugo Gottschlichpark: between Pappenheimgasse 27 and 33
22., Langobardenstraße: ggü. Langobardenstraße 122
