New global report on the state of tobacco harm reduction highlights ways to reduce tobacco-related deaths

A groundbreaking new report on the Global State of Tobacco Harm Reduction (GSTHR) uses the latest insights and new data forecasts to inform the current global Tobacco Harm Reduction (THR) Situation and to assess their potential to rapidly reduce tobacco-related disease and mortality.

The Global State of Tobacco Harm Reduction 2024: A Situation Report (GSTHR 2024)from the UK-based Public Health Agency Knowledge·Action·Changeshows that there is strong evidence of a link between the increasing use of safer nicotine products (SNP) and a corresponding decline in smoking prevalence in a number of countries worldwide.

Limiting the harm caused by tobacco consumption encourages people who smoke and cannot or do not want to stop using nicotine to switch to much safer products, including vapes (e-cigarettes), tobacco-free nicotine pouches, Swedish-style snus and heated tobacco products. Legal access to a range of SNPs offers enormous potential to improve the health of the billion people who smoke worldwide. Investigations on behalf of GSTHR 2024 show that more than two-thirds of the world’s adult population – in almost 130 countries – now have legal access to at least one form of SNP.

The report includes a new estimate of the global number of vapers, which has increased to an estimated 114 million, compared to 58 million in 2018. Another 30 million people are using other, safer nicotine products, so it is estimated by the GSTHR There are now around 144 million SNP consumers worldwide. However, access to combustible tobacco products, which are known to kill up to half of all users, remains legal for 100% of the world’s adult population.

The new report deals in detail with the situation of smoking and THR Latin America and Eastern Europe and Central Asia. The GSTHR 2024 also focuses on four countries that have enabled THR to reduce smoking rates – Great Britain, Japan, Norway and New Zealand New Zealand – and highlights the different paths each country has taken to dramatically reduce the prevalence of smoking.

Harry Shapiro, editor-in-chief and lead author of The Global State of Tobacco Harm Reduction 2024: In a status report it says: “If fully implemented, tobacco harm reduction has the potential to rapidly reduce the number of smokers worldwide. This would be one of the greatest public health achievements of the 21st century.”
