This year, Wien Neubau is getting a new pedestrian zone on the four Saturdays in Advent: For the first time, the section of Neubaugasse between Mariahilfer Straße and Westbahnstraße is closed to vehicles. The traffic takes a break in favor of relaxed shopping in the 7th district.
In Vienna Neubau this year, the shopping success story will be expanded by a chapter during Advent: On the Advent Saturdays 2024, on November 30th, December 7th, December 14th and December 21st, the Neubaugasse between Mariahilfer Straße and Westbahnstraße will be pedestrianized for the first time* inner zone. Between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. you can stroll there in a relaxed manner, undisturbed by vehicles.
“Good things close by: The many great family businesses in Vienna Neubau offer a unique shopping experience. “The new pedestrian zone on Neubaugasse will make the 7th district the most beautiful backdrop you can imagine for Advent,” says Neubau’s district leader Markus Reiter.
Whether strolling through Christmas markets, experiencing films for the whole family in the film house, enjoying the Christmas sounds of horn blowers in public places or enjoying a concert by the oldest choir in the 7th district, the Chor Wien Neubau, in a church: Advent in Neubau offers a variety of highlights . All program items for young and old can be found online at im7ten.com at a glance.
Pause button for traffic
“We welcome the decision to press the pause button on traffic in Neubaugasse on Advent Saturdays. This makes the meeting area even safer for our customers and creates the peace and quiet that many people long for for a relaxed Christmas stroll,” says Peter Herzog from the board of the IG der Kaufleute am Neubau.
Wie Neubau ensures a real shopping experience – no online shop can replicate the atmosphere and flair that you get here. Kurt Wilhelm, chairman of the IG der Kaufleute am Neubau, is proud that the new pedestrian zone on the main street of the 7th district was made possible: “Everything went very quickly this year and we would like to thank the city and district for the administrative support. Next year we also hope to receive financial help for the closure – just like the traders on Mariahilfer Straße have always done.” Wilhelm’s pious wish for the Christ child: co-financing of the closure costs for 2025 by the district, city and Chamber of Commerce.
Mitigate the impact of the subway construction work
“Especially in the run-up to Christmas, local retailers are increasingly coming under pressure to be able to successfully compete against online giants. In order to support the businesses in Vienna Neubau even better, we have decided to take another important measure this year together with the city and the IG der Kaufleute am Neubau,” points out district leader Markus Reiter.
This is particularly necessary in view of the extension of the subway construction work for the U2xU5 line junction: As much as the 7th district supports the subway construction as an important climate protection project for the success of the mobility transition, additional efforts are now required so that all shopping streets in Vienna Neubau affected by the construction site are not permanently damaged. “As a district, we would very much like to meet the challenge, but this requires a joint effort with the City of Vienna and a clear perspective for the residents and entrepreneurs. The aim must be to develop sustainable measures together in order to cushion the effects of construction delays on local trade,” said Reiter.
