“What the union is doing here once again is class warfare. This blinds them to real solutions in the fight against inflation. A good union advocates for more wages for employees – and doesn’t turn them against employers,” says NEOS MP and restaurateur Sepp Schellhorn in response to GPA chairwoman Barbara Teiber’s recent statements about a reduction Employers in particular would benefit from the additional wage costs.
The myth of the “greedy entrepreneur” who would enrich himself by reducing non-wage labor costs must be put to an end as soon as possible, said Schellhorn. So instead of “entrepreneur bashing”, we need to look together at how people can keep more of their net income: “In times of severe staff shortages, as an entrepreneur I am happy if I can pay my employees decent wages and thus keep them in the company . For us NEOS, it is about creating the scope so that employees cost the company less and earn more. Our goal is 10 percent more net. This is possible if we reduce non-employee-related wage costs – without any loss of performance. But here the union is taking a stand – just as it sees no problem in the fact that the finance minister collects more than half when people work on Sundays and public holidays when everyone else is off. People should actually have 100 percent of it.”
Schellhorn also doesn’t accept the much-trumpeted argument that the welfare state would suffer from a reduction in non-wage labor costs: “Austria has one of the most expensive social systems – but the benefits don’t match, people are already paying twice. So instead of passing these costs on to companies, the federal government must finance them from the budget and use tax money more efficiently.”
