Hoyos: “Let’s put a stop to the FPÖ’s EU exit plans.”
Vienna (OTS) – After Harald Vilimsky’s announcement that he would press the “red button” for Austria to leave the European Union at any time, NEOS Secretary General Douglas Hoyos is once again demanding that all domestic parties commit to this – whatever the next government may look like – to preface the coalition agreement with a preamble in which a possible referendum on Austria’s exit from the EU is excluded.
“Let’s write the ‘no’ to Öxit in a coalition preamble,” says Hoyos. “My appeal is aimed particularly at the SPÖ and ÖVP to join us in making a clearly pro-European commitment. Together for a united Europe and against incitement, hatred and division.”
Brexit has shown what happens when you don’t put up a thick fire wall against the temptations of nationalist populism. In a sovereign and united Europe, such a scenario should not be allowed to repeat itself in any member state of the Union, especially not “in a country like Austria, whose population is one of the big winners from EU membership.”
Blue Öxit campaign contradicts the will of Austrians
A permanent Öxit campaign by the FPÖ not only endangers the urgently needed cohesion of society, but also clearly contradicts the will of Austrians. “They regularly speak out overwhelmingly against such EU exit plans,” said Hoyos. “Real pro-Europeans who want the best for Austria should have no problem with such a declaration. And anyone who leaves doubts about their plans should, in the interests of our country and Europe, have no place in the next government.”
