NEOS new building demand review of all street and park names on the new building

“The current case must be a wake-up call for everyone,” says Julia Deutsch, club chairwoman of NEOS Neubau, after a report in the Wiener Zeitung highlighted Mizzi Langer-Kauba’s highly problematic Nazi past. Just a few months before, the Neubau district council followed a request from the Neubauer Greens and the ÖVP and named a park in the district after the alpinist.

“We assumed that each party would carefully check in advance which names they proposed for renaming or renaming and we wrongly relied on the Greens’ judgment. “We have also warned several times against rushing naming decisions through the district council,” said Deutsch.

At the district council meeting in March, NEOS Neubau suggested setting up a group of experts in the Neubauer Cultural Commission to closely examine the past of the planned namesakes.

Julia Deutsch said: “We hope that the current case will lead to a rethink among the other factions and that we will be able to agree on a new procedure for naming parks and streets in the district. We also demand that a commission of historians carefully review all of the namings that have been made so far in the new building to ensure that no other people with problematic pasts in our district are honored. Hopefully one thing is clear to everyone: there is not an inch of space in the new building for Nazi glorification.”
