NEOS at the EU special summit: 50 billion for Europe’s security | NEOS

Brandstätter: “We have to ensure that Ukraine can defend itself because it also defends us.”

Vienna (OTS) “That’s 50 billion euros for Europe’s security. There is no alternative to this support for Ukraine. We must ensure that Ukraine can defend itself because it also defends us. “It is now particularly important that Viktor Orbán finally sees with his own eyes what is happening in Ukraine and what is at stake there,” said NEOS foreign policy spokesman and EU leading candidate Helmut Brandstätter, commenting on today’s EU agreement -Special summit.

According to Brandstätter, the special summit is also proof that there is an urgent need for reform in the EU: “I welcome the fact that, after Mr. Orbán’s blockades, the heads of state and government are now speaking with one voice, at least when it comes to this support. On the way to an effective and sovereign ‘United States of Europe’, we urgently need to talk about reforms, such as the abolition of the unanimity principle,” said Brandstätter.

Gamon to Orbán: Europe’s solidarity cannot be shaken by blackmail.

NEOS MEP Claudia Gamon also sees today’s agreement as positive: “We welcome the fact that the heads of state and government were able to agree on this important package. In the end, Orban had to give in because he himself understands that the fate of Ukraine is also our fate. Gamon underlines the geopolitical need for immediate assistance to Ukraine: “If support for Ukraine weakens at this critical stage, then Russia will have all the trump cards. All that is missing is a new US president who is not committed to defending NATO’s eastern periphery, but would rather focus his attention on China. Then Russia would have free rein to conquer new spheres of interest.” Even Orbán knows that, adds Gamon.
