National Council election 2024: Rural areas secure ÖVP result

The preliminary results of the 2024 National Council election show the People’s Party in second place with 26.5 percent of the votes cast. The People’s Party was able to do well above the overall result in rural areas with 30.8 percent of the vote. In the EU elections in June, the ÖVP achieved a better result in rural areas than in urban areas. Among the self-employed voter group, the People’s Party even came first with 31 percent of the votes in the National Council election.

“After the EU elections, we started to catch up and managed to mobilize numerous people in rural areas. Karl Nehammer took responsibility for the People’s Party when we had 21 percent of the vote in the polls. Yesterday’s result is a significant improvement, but we still cannot be satisfied with second place,” said Farmers’ Association President Abg.z.NR DI Georg Strasser and Farmers’ Association Director Ing. Mag. David Sweet firmly. “Thank you to all voters, our rural candidates, all election workers and to everyone who supported the People’s Party and Karl Nehammer in the election campaign!”

Rural areas and the self-employed secure ÖVP results

31 percent of the self-employed, a smaller proportion of whom also include farmers, said they would vote for the People’s Party. “The self-employed professional group achieved by far the best result for the People’s Party. Among farmers, support for the ÖVP is likely to be more than 70 percent, as a survey among Lower Austrian farming families in spring 2024 showed,” explains Süß.

With 30.8 percent of the vote, the People’s Party’s result in rural communities is clearly higher than in the cities. “This laid the foundation for the overall result,” said Strasser, who sets the direction for the coming political work: “We see the result as a clear mandate to continue to do everything we can to support the concerns of farming families in the future. We do not live from the problem like others, but are actively committed to finding concrete solutions that will sustainably improve people’s lives.”
