Music streaming: focus on the interests of the authors

European Parliament adopts report on music streaming market

Culture is a fundamental element of Europe and a powerful driver of its economy. The European Parliament’s report on music streaming is a call to address the critical concerns of the cultural workers who are at the core of this ecosystem. A big round of applause!

Peter Vieweger, AKM President

Vienna (OTS) The plenary session of the European Parliament today overwhelmingly approved the own-initiative report on “Cultural diversity and the conditions for authors in the European music streaming marketThe report recognizes the significant issues faced by creators and proposes EU-wide initiatives to lay the foundation for a fairer and more sustainable ecosystem in this ever-growing market.

Imbalance in the streaming market

Despite the massive online music consumption, the availability of more than 100 million tracks on streaming platforms and the exponential growth of music streaming on pure gaming platforms, social media or user-uploaded content, the market offers authors and composers none fair compensation with which they could build their career. The report points to the existing imbalance in the distribution of revenue and the insufficient growth of the overall revenue pie. Fraudulent and unfair market practices put authors at a disadvantage, and harmful manipulation practices in streaming and the distribution of AI-generated content pose an impending threat to cultural diversity.

Call for legal regulations

The report proposes initiatives at EU level and calls on the Commission to propose legal provisions to ensure the transparency of streaming platforms’ algorithms and content recommendation systems. The aim is also to ensure that European works are seen and found.

AKM President Peter Vieweger sees the acceptance of the report as a first positive step: “Culture is a fundamental element of Europe and a powerful driver of its economy. The European Parliament’s report on music streaming is a call to address the critical concerns of the cultural workers who are at the core of this ecosystem. A big round of applause!” Vieweger is counting on broad support from political representatives in Austria in dealing with this issue and eliminating the imbalance.
