MQ publishes first climate report | MuseumsQuartier Vienna, July 17, 2024

The MQ is a laboratory for change where we combine culture, sustainability, diversity and social inclusion. With our first climate report, we present our vision of a climate-neutral cultural area and the measures we are using to implement it

Bettina Leidl, MQ director

Vienna (OTS) The MuseumsQuartier Vienna was the first Austrian cultural institution to publish its climate report.

The MQ considers sustainability on an ecological, social and economic level and would like to play a pioneering role in the social transformation process. With the “MQ goes Green” initiative, it is taking concrete steps towards climate neutrality, which it wants to achieve by 2030.

“The MQ is a laboratory for change where we combine culture, sustainability, diversity and social inclusion. With our first climate report, we present our vision of a climate-neutral cultural area and the measures we will use to implement it.”said MQ director Bettina Leidl.

The “Climate Report 2023” summarizes the measures taken so far, offers an outlook for the next few years and presents the individual aspects of “MQ goes Green” in more detail.
The initiative is the result of a detailed and participatory strategy development process. Areas of action, goals, indicators and concrete measures were identified. This path is characterized by the cooperation of many stakeholders. Taking their differences and autonomy into account is an essential success factor.

Extensive greening measures will increase the quality of stay and biodiversity in the MQ’s outdoor spaces and reduce the temperature in the area. Of the approximately 22,000 m² of open space, 5,134 m² is already green space. This will be gradually expanded to include climate-resilient trees and plants. The planning process for large-scale permanent planting and unsealing is being accompanied by the renowned landscape planning and architecture firm DnD.

Another central component of the initiative is the economical use of energy and the use of modern, low-CO2 energy sources and delivery technologies. Based on preliminary technical investigations, there is great potential for savings and modernization. A detailed overview of the measures implemented can be found in a separate chapter of the report.

The artistic implementation forms the basis of “MQ goes Green” and is reflected in all artistic contexts and formats. The aim is to impart knowledge on the topic of sustainability, stimulate socially relevant discourses and make the vision of a better future accessible to a broad audience. This happens in the MQ exhibition rooms and in the courtyards, but also at the events on the MQ summer stage.
