Augustin: approaching people

Since 1995 the Augustin – but especially its sellers: inside – has been part of the cityscape of Vienna.

Whether Viano at the Volkstheater, Susi before Spar in the Wiedner Hauptstraße or Nina in Alser Straße: The charm of the newspaper primarily carries its colporters: inside out.

«I try to delight people to put a smile on their face. The most important thing is the eye contact and people approach people.» (Viano, at Augustin for 13 years)

The approximately 500 sellers: Inside: They are all affected by poverty, live on the edge of society. The newspaper sale helps to alleviate the worst need – half of the price remains with the seller: inside.

«I need the sale to pay rent and food. I can’t look for any other work without a work permit.» (Francis, Augustin for 21 years)

Together with the community around and professional social work, the Augustin team offers connection and self-empowerment for people who are often not heard.

In addition, with his activism over the past 30 years, Augustin made a significant contribution to making poverty more visible in the middle of society.

After all, two percent of the Austrian Population in poverty and social exclusion, a total of 1.2 million people are acutely at risk of poverty.

Finally, an independent, journalistic product appears with Augustin every 14 days-more important than ever in times of advertising corruption and MessageControl.

30 years of city history

The Augustin is part of the history of Vienna, so an exhibition deserves an exhibition in the community Gallery in the Vienna Museum.

“More than one newspaper: 30 years of Augustin” looks back to three decades of history full of social changes, which are always reflected in the newspaper and with his sellers: inside. The latter are therefore at the center of the exhibition.

“More than one newspaper: 30 years of Augustin” runs from September 18 to November 23, 2025 in the community Gallery in the Vienna Museum on Karlsplatz.

On tour, 23 editions – 23 districts: The editorial team presented the latest edition in public space every two weeks in cooperation with sellers: Interior every two weeks:
City exploration: In autumn, three sellers will lead through the city, from a perspective by people with poverty.
30-year-annual championship: There will also be new Augustin products on time for the opening

The 30 years of promotions take place as part of Shift, a funding program of the City of Vienna.
