More than 100 measures for more traffic safety have been implemented since 2010
Vienna (OTS) –

At the top of the list of priorities has been on the priority list for decades for decades for decades. Since 2010, all measures and projects have also been recorded in their own traffic safety program, which is regularly developed.

However, the balance sheet in these 15 years is more than impressive: more than 100 measures have been implemented since then, the focus was on two focuses: on the one hand to create a forgiving infrastructure and, on the other hand, to promote a desired driving behavior through consciousness formation and to prevent human driving errors from the outset.

“Our balance sheet after 15 years of traffic safety program is of course also a reason to be proud of what has been achieved,” says Asfinag board member Hartwig Hufnagl. “But it is much more for us to get an incentive to make even better and even more innovative in order to be able to provide our customers the safest motorways in Europe.”

Less accidents, less injured people and fewer fatalities

An infrastructure, the vehicles and humans, form the “team” that has to work together for a plus for traffic safety. In the best case, the accident statistics then show a regular tendency down. Despite a significant increase in traffic since 2012, the number of accidents and those of the people injured fell. The number of people killed died from 64 in 2012 to 32 in the previous year.

The main causes of accidents are still: carelessness and distraction, followed by non -adapted speed and fatigue.

New construction second tunnel tubes and innovations

In order to make the highways and expressways safer, ASFINAG has implemented more than 100 measures and a billion dollar investment program in the past 15 years. Some of the most important measures:

  • On the A 10 Tauern highway, Tauern and Katschberg tunnels, on the A 9 Pyhrnautobahn the Tunnel chain Klaus, the Bosruck and the Gleinalmtunnel were fully expanded and the existing tubes modernized. The entire tunnel safety program since 2001 has been invested so far 5.8 billion euros.

  • On the S 31 Burgenland expressway and the S 37 Klagenfurter expressway, ASFINAG built structural middle separations to prevent frontal collisions. The safety expansion of the S 4 Mattersburg expressway has already started.

  • Innovations such as acoustic tunnel monitoring acutely ensure a clear plus for security. The system acute, which can recognize atypical noises in a tunnel and raise the alarm, is now installed in more than 30 tunnels in Austria.

  • Also an innovation from Austria are the terminals and impact dampers, with which junctions have been secured, for example. These constructions – also used in Formula 1 – absorb the impact energy if a vehicle comes off the road through second sleep. The gap in the guiding rails completes the project, in which more than 40 million euros were invested in total.

  • Information campaigns for consciousness formation are another focus, such as the “Park & Write” campaign in 2024 or “My mom, my dad works for you”.

  • In order to offer enough opportunities for a break or a longer rest, ASFINAG has rebuilt numerous rest areas – currently 59 modern rest areas are in operation.

  • Traffic Manager teams that come to the aid of accidents, breakdowns or even traffic jams are in use in Vienna, Linz, Graz and Salzburg.
