More range, more efficiency – AT&S starts research project Hipower 5.0 for smart electric transport

Austria’s leading microelectronic manufacturer AT&S participates as a strategic partner in the EU research project Hipower 5.0, which will develop new solutions for semiconductor integration and control systems for high-compacts and smart electrical drive components. These innovations will bring more efficiency and thus larger ranges.

The kick -off meeting took place in Graz in July. As part of the meeting, the participants presented: the work packages inside and voted on the applications, creating a solid basis for future cooperation.

“Our contributions to top European research initiatives such as the ‘European Chips Act’ with the Hipower 5.0 project show that AT & S researchers are at the forefront internationally. Our technology developments are crucial to enable efficient and sustainable systems for a livable morning”says Mike Morianz, programs Manager R&D at AT&S.

The project funded by the EU builds on the success of the completed Hiefficient initiative and marks another milestone in technological development. AT&S will bring in its comprehensive expertise in the areas of high-performance conductor platform technology and semiconductor integration, which are decisive for the next generation of e-mobility.

AT&S is at the wheel

AT&S is a technology leader in the integration of semiconductors that are used to control and adapt electrical currents with high voltages and electricity. Through the latest production techniques for the integration of the latest WBG haulders (Wide Band Gap) from materials such as gallium nitride or silicon carbide, AT&S can produce high-quality components that guarantee significantly lower losses, increased lifespan, optimal heat management and a competitive cost structure. WBG materials replace silicon in the semiconductor components, which convert alternating current in density or direct current in converters. WBG converters are smaller, lighter and more durable while they also generate fewer electrical and thermal losses.

Electric car drives with AT & S technology already ensure that electric cars can deal extremely efficiently with high current strengths and tensions, which significantly improves the range and durability of the drives. This also minimizes the power consumption of the systems and allows manufacturers to put their sustainability goals even higher. The AT&S research department will further move the limits of what is feasible as part of Hipower 5.0.

A total of 45 partners from industry and research work together in the three -year Hipower 5.0 project. AVL List GmbH takes over the coordination. The partners include renowned companies such as Infineon Technologies, Mercedes Benz, Siemens, Renault ampere, Schaeffler, Valeo, TDK Electronics as well as numerous universities and research institutions, including Sal, Fraunhofer IZM, TU Chemnitz, TU Turin, TU Eindhoven, Aalborg University and IMEC.
