An alarming study by the Upper Austrian University of Education shows: The fitness and health of children in Upper Austria has fallen dramatically! More non-swimmers, poorer endurance, an increase in overweight and obesity – the consequences of the Corona policy are devastating.
“Lockdowns, school closings and playground closures have caused massive damage to the children, lack of exercise and lack of social contacts have led to a worrying development,” emphasizes LAbg. Dagmar Häusler, BSc., MFG-Austria Federal Party Chairman Deputy. “Politicians have ignored the needs of children and have not only put their health at risk with the evidence-free Corona measures, but have demonstrably damaged them. The MFG warned about this from the beginning.”
Dagmar Häusler sees one of the main problems in the advancing digitalization even in early childhood: “Mrs. State Councilor Christine Haberlander – responsible for health AND education – is welcome to think about whether pushing digitalization in primary schools is the right way. There is now a lot of scientific evidence that any kind of digitalization, even in primary schools, is highly harmful to the social, cognitive and physical development of our children. Digital media of any kind has no place in primary schools!”
Dagmar Häusler sees exercise in the great outdoors as essential for physical – and mental – health: “In Upper Austria we are blessed with many publicly accessible places in nature that can be used wonderfully for leisure activities. We need to give our children the motivation to put their smartphones aside and instead go outside and exercise in nature.”
The demands of the MFG are:
Stop the digitalization offensive: In particular, it must be ensured that primary schools are as far as possible free of digital media. Educators can set a good example here.
More exercise at school: School sports must be expanded and made more attractive.
Parental awareness: Parents need to be made aware of the importance of exercise and healthy eating.
“The health of our children is our future,” emphasizes Dagmar Häusler. “We have to act now to combat the negative consequences of the corona pandemic and to give our children a healthy future. Politicians must finally take responsibility for their wrong decisions and act.”
