The globalization of the economy enables companies to flexible production, delivery and disposal to frequently foreign suppliers. However, low costs regularly correct with lower occupational safety and environmental standards. The “supply chain directive” of the European Union (EU), which came into force in July 2024, reacts to these conditions and for the first time establishes a binding legal framework for a cross-sector obligation to respect human rights and the environment by companies.
A common independent scientific study by the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Grund and Human Rights and the German Institute for Sustainability, Corporate Law and Reporting (only) of the University of Cologne examined the function and importance of audits and certifications in this context between November 2023 and January 2025.
