The company MED TRUST, founded in 1997 by Werner Trenker, moved its headquarters to Marz in Burgenland in 2007 in order to strengthen further international growth. Since 2009, and this is unique, MED TRUST has been nominated for the Burgenland Innovation Prize every year – for 15 years – and also won it in 2016 and 2010. With its products under the “Wellion” brand, MED TRUST is one of the most innovative, internationally active companies in Burgenland.

In 2024, MED TRUST submitted its newly developed Wellion SAFETYLANCETS series for the innovation award. The Wellion SAFETYLANCET is a safety lancet for safe and gentle blood collection.
In order to prevent needlestick injuries to nursing and health care personnel and the associated risk of infection, the Needlestick Ordinance (NaStV) stipulates, among other things, the use of safe instruments. In this sense, safety lancets have proven their worth and are used in everyday medical practice in doctors’ offices, hospitals or nursing homes as well as for private patients to collect blood.
The sterile Wellion SAFETYLANCETS from MED TRUST are ready for immediate use and are quick and easy to use. When developing the contact-activated release, explicit attention was paid to ensuring that only patients came into contact with the needle. After removing the safety cap, they are pressed onto the desired puncture site, whereupon the specially developed activation structure is released. It lets the needle pierce the skin for a short time, while always maintaining the correct distance between the device and the skin. After use, the needle automatically retracts into the housing. This means that the needle is safely stored in the plastic housing before and after activation, which prevents a second use or injury to the user or specialist staff.
The innovation of SAFTEYLANCETS lies in their small size: they are around a third smaller than the previous model and comparable products on the market. This minimizes the consumption of plastic material during production, which subsequently significantly reduces the amount of medical waste.
The Innovation Award of the State of Burgenland was presented in 2024 by State Governor Mag. Hans Peter Doskozil. The state of Burgenland honors companies that expand their development potential through innovation and creativity and are therefore the driving force of the local economy. “Innovation is the engine of the economy and must be able to develop freely – as uninhibited as possible – through excessive regulations.”
