Maypole climbing, ribbon dancing and storytellers | Austrian Open Air Museum Stübing, April 26, 2024

May 1st at the excursion destination in Stübing with a program for the whole family

Stübing near Graz (OTS) May is traditionally welcomed at the Austrian Open Air Museum in Stübing with the setting up of the maypole. Regional music and dance groups ensure a good atmosphere and the numerous activities around the maypole such as maypole climbing, entertaining fairy tales and craft demonstrations guarantee an entertaining holiday program. Regional delicacies in the museum inn round off the diverse offering.

Setting up the maypole

From 9 a.m., young visitors can gather at the museum entrance, sit on the maypole and be taken by tractor to the “village square” near the museum inn. On the previous days, the maypole is stripped of bark, decorated with artistic carvings and decorated with a tied, decorated wreath. The erection itself takes time and requires a lot of muscle strength, because the artistically carved tree has a large diameter and is erected using “shearing rods”.

Band dance

The bandl dance around the decorated maypole is also a wonderful performance. Colored ribbons alternately hang down, are caught during the dance, created into braided patterns and then dissolved again. Maypole climbers now try to reach the red wine bottle attached under the treetop. The children’s skill and strength are also required here, as they have fun trying to reach the refreshing cracker.

Plant offerings in the Museum Valley

The hearts of plant lovers will beat faster when they can buy special plants for their own garden on this day. A wonderful opportunity to spend May 1st actively, entertainingly and enjoyably with family and friends.
