May shows 98.6 percent power consumption cover by renewable energies

Compared to the previous year, renewable production in the May 2025 (KW 18-22) decreased by almost a quarter (specifically by 22.9 percent). The main reason is the rainfall compared to the previous year

Against this background, the proportion of hydropower, which, at 3,351 GWH, has the majority of the renewable, significantly decreased in the year (minus 3.0 percent share in the renewable in May 2024). The wind energy came at 595 GWh (plus 1.4 percent share), while the photovoltaic feed-in 761 GWH (plus 0.9 percent) contributed to the generation of sustainable electricity.

Austria is again an electricity import country

With a balance, an import of 105 GWh (based on the timetables) was available over the entire month of May (APG*control zone APG*), whereby electricity could be exported abroad on only twelve days. A completely different picture was characterized in the previous year, in which-thanks to the good running water feed-in-a balance sheet electricity export could be documented on all 31 days and resulted in an export of 1,300 GWH in the balance.

This comparison of the two monthly oaldes in particular shows the extreme volatility of the overall system in Austria.

Strong transmission network fundamental for security of supply

The secure power supply is the basis of a modern, sustainable, digital society and essentially for a resilient economic and living location. In order to be able to keep the security of supply in Austria in the future in the world, it requires consistent renovation and expansion to a capacity power infrastructure. A lack of or inadequate expansion of the network limits the integration of renewable energies, increases import dependence and subsequently weakens Austria.

“A strong transmission network is a guarantee that it is more renewable – and ideally also inexpensive electricity – Austria -wide Managebar or this from abroad for Austria’s electricity. Supply-proof and sustainable energy system, but also elementary for a flourishing business location- especially against the background of the increasing electrification of all areas of life and economic sectors, ”says APG board spokesman Gerhard Christiner.

In order to make the volatile, renewable electricity usable, this strong power grid is needed, which transports the electricity to where it is needed. In order to prevent overload in the power grid and to ensure the safe power supply, so-called redispatch measures are avoided. This means the targeted and controlled use of power plants.

In May 2025, the driving style of the power plants in Austria had to be corrected on 5 days to prevent overload in the power grid. Nine days less than in May 2024. Another picture is shown in the cumulative view of the first five months. There is an increase in comparison to the previous year: In the first five months of 2025 (76 days until the end of May), more redispatching was required compared to the comparison period last year (2024: 66 days). This underlines the urgent need for stronger network capacities.

In connection with redispatching, costs arise that the electricity customer has to pay. Until May, the costs for the first five months of the year were 30.0 million euros. – Costs that reflect the lack of network capacities.

A negative effect in addition to the costs or the increasing CO-Cconsal consumption is the “trimming” of renewable power plant production. For example, wind power plants or running hydropower plants that produce electricity at the time are shut down to avoid overloading in the power grid. Since the beginning of the year, 5,297 megawatt hours (MWh) of electricity (and thus 1,059 MWh per month) have been “lost” in this way.

These figures prove the need for a modern, resilient, overall energy industry with a particularly capacity of transmission network infrastructure.

Energy exchange within Austria

APG is managed by APG’s energy exchange throughout the federal territory via the transmission network. Electricity surpluses of the individual federal states can thus be distributed across Austria and deficits can be compensated for.

In Carinthia (255 GWH) and in Lower Austria (180 GWH), the highest amounts of energy were fed into the APG network in May and thus made available across Austria. Most of the electricity was moved from the APG network from Vienna (411 GWh) and Carinthia (122 GWH).

Responsible power consumption

In May (KW 18-22), 4,990 GWH were used in Austria from the public network based on the currently available data-around 1.4 percent more than in the previous year (4,919 GWH). This is the power reference from the public network (including network losses, without pumping stream) in the regular zone APG. This does not contain the consumption covered by its own PV current.

APG continues to pursue the development of the domestic e-economy and published under www.apg.at/infografiken/ Regularly graphics on the following topics: energy exchange, electricity consumption Austria, electricity generation renewable, import/export uvam

* With the exception of a corridor in Vorarlberg and Tyrol, the control zone APG comprises all of Austria.

About Austrian Power Grid (APG)As an independent transmission system operator, Austrian Power Grid (APG) is responsible for safe power supply Austria. With our powerful and digital electricity infrastructure, as well as the application of State-of-the-art-Technologien If we integrate renewable energies and thus reduce import dependency, are platform for the electricity market, create access to inexpensive electricity and thus form the basis for a supply-proof and future-proof economic and lifeline. The APG network extends over a route length of around 3,500 km, which the company maintains with a team of around 1,000 specialist: operates, maintains and continuously the increasing requirements of the electrification adapted to society, economy and industry. A large part of the 67 substances that are distributed throughout Austria are operated by the tax center in Vienna. In 2024, security of supply was also thanks to the committed employees: inside, 99.99 percent and thus in the world’s top field. Our investments of 630 million euros 2025 (2024: 440 million, 2023: 490 million euros) are Economic engine And essential building block for the achievement of Austria’s energy goals. A total of APG will invest around 9 billion euros in the network and conversion by 2034.
