Many paths to care

On the occasion of International Nursing Day, the Vienna Red Cross reports on the various entry options into the nursing sector and the diversity of the work.

Vienna (OTS) You hear it again and again on the radio, read it in the newspaper or see it on television: nursing staff are urgently needed. On this year’s Nursing Day, we want to focus not only on what is still needed, but also on what we already have and what working in this important area entails. Employees from almost 40 nations and with backgrounds that could hardly be more different have all found their place in the care and support department at the Vienna Red Cross.

Care with passion

Thomas Stietka is a long-time employee in the care and support department at the Vienna Red Cross. He originally began his career in a completely different area: the film industry. Nevertheless, the colleague decided to work with us and worked for years, first as a home helper and then as a nursing assistant in the Vienna Red Cross. Finally, a few years ago he completed his training to become a qualified health and nursing nurse (DGKP). “I have been deeply passionate about my work in this area and am glad to have chosen this path“, reports Stietka. He has been in partial retirement since June 2023.

He has also worked for the Vienna Red Cross for many years Gorica Rokos. From 2002 to 2004 she completed her part-time training as a nursing assistant. She has been working with us in this profession for over 20 years. This year she also successfully completed her training as a nursing assistant.

In addition to the experienced colleagues, new faces are always starting to work in nursing at the Vienna Red Cross. One of them is Yolanda Amaral and Sousa Sacaia. She originally comes from Portugal and worked there in the field of cardiopulmonology. In 2022 she began her training as a nursing assistant at the Vienna Red Cross training center. Since October last year she has completed her training and is an integral part of our staff.

Also Nada Kostic has been with the Vienna Red Cross since last year. She works as a home helper and reports: “I do this job with heart and soul. For me, my work means not only providing support, but also bringing joy into my clients’ everyday lives. Every day offers the opportunity to offer not only a helping hand, but also an open ear and security. I treat people this way because I hope that I will be treated this way when I need it later.“

Diversity at the Vienna Red Cross

There are many ways you can start a career in the nursing field. No matter what gender, age or origin – everyone is welcome at the Vienna Red Cross. “We are pleased that we can offer meaningful work and give many different people the opportunity to pursue a career in the nursing and care setting“, says Alexander Eder, head of the nursing and care department at the Vienna Red Cross.

In addition to the numerous offers for people in need of care, the Vienna Red Cross also offers various training and further education at its school for health and nursing.
