From next year there will be a mandatory summer school for children with lack of knowledge of German. Vienna’s mayor and city councilor Bettina Emmerling welcomes the decision and speaks of a crucial step to sustainably improve educational opportunities.
“The mandatory school for children with a lack of German knowledge announced today is an educational policy milestone and a crucial step to start catching up in education. This is exactly what we have asked NEOS for years and is now being delivered. The axis Vienna-Association works, we are not looking away, but act,” said Emmerling.
Vienna itself has also been massive on language support for years. The German learning offer has been continuously expanded in summer since 2022. Now the city offers children fair starting conditions before the summer German courses and facilitates the transition from kindergarten to school. This year all places were fully booked. This is a clear evidence that this offer works, because German is the admission ticket to our society and the prerequisite for participation from the start.
In addition, language support in Vienna is already reinforced in kindergarten, with more hours, targeted programs and additional specialist staff at locations with increased needs. This ensures that children start with the best chances from the start.
“With NEOS in the government, whether in the federal government or Vienna, it is ensured that the expansion of educational offers and the focus on German funding is guaranteed. Because only if children have sufficient language skills when they enter the school, they also have the best chances of a self -determined life,” emphasizes Emmerling.
