Vienna (OTS) – City Councilor Karl Mahrer reacts sharply to Mayor Dr. Michael Ludwig on the security situation in Vienna.
“The call for additional police presence is only intended to distract from the real causes of escalating crime and violence,” said Mahrer. “The Federal Police Director ordered police forces from other federal states to Vienna for a priority operation more than a week ago. For this purpose, the standby unit was founded in Vienna and a separate unit to combat youth crime was founded by the Ministry of the Interior and is working at full speed in Vienna.
Fighting the causes instead of fighting the symptoms
“Police measures alone cannot combat the true causes of crime and violence,” emphasizes Mahrer. “These lie in a social, educational and integration policy in Vienna that has been completely misguided for decades. Mayor Ludwig should finally honestly admit the existing problem. He should focus on tackling the causes of violence rather than just reacting to the symptoms and looking for responsibility on others.”
Disagreement in the SPÖ on migration and integration
Mahrer particularly points out the divided line on migration and integration within the SPÖ under the leadership of Traiskirchen’s mayor Andreas Babler: “The problems in Vienna are also the result of this divided policy within the SPÖ.”
Concrete measures required
Instead of making unnecessary and unrealistic demands and wanting to place the police under his leadership, Mahrer demands that the mayor take concrete measures for integration: “Comprehensive German language support in kindergartens and schools, an immediate reduction in social benefits, comprehensive prevention of violence in schools and the consistent demand for the The obligation to adapt to our values is the order of the day.”
Hidden criticism of the police
In addition, Mahrer criticizes Ludwig’s proposal as a hidden criticism of the Vienna police officers: “They risk their lives every day for our security. Such criticism undermines trust in an institution that demonstrates its professionalism and commitment on a daily basis.”
Appeal to the mayor
Mahrer appeals to Ludwig: “People don’t want a fight in this unprecedented security crisis in Vienna. Only solidarity between all those responsible can help in this difficult situation. An immediate stop to Vienna’s magnetic effect by reducing excessive social benefits and a consistent education and integration policy are urgently needed. Our action plan to combat youth violence is on the table. Let’s implement it together.”
