Customs, traditions and cuisine surrounding Easter in the Lower Austrian state capital
Vienna (OTS) – “Magical Easter” will be released in a new edition on Sunday, March 24, 2024, at 4 p.m. on ORF 2 on the trail of customs, traditions and cuisine surrounding Easter in “St. Pölten”.
Colorful Easter arrangements and Easter bouquets are heralds of the holiday and spring. Because spring has arrived on the Traisen, in the Au you can discover the first greenery. Homemade decorations are a big topic at this time: crocheted Easter eggs, for example, are created in St. Pölten’s care facilities for senior citizens.
Holy Week begins on the Sunday before Easter, Palm Sunday. The celebrations in St. Pölten start with a palm procession in the cloister of the cathedral. This cloister is the heart of the former medieval monastery district, today’s cathedral district.
One of the venerable churches in the city of St. Pölten is the Franciscan Church. Located opposite the town hall, it is another architectural jewel on the town hall square. After the Last Supper Mass on Maundy Thursday, the bells in all churches fall silent. You can still hear bells ringing in St. Pölten. Namely the carillon in the town hall tower, which with its 48 bells ensures a fine sound in the city every day.
After the 40 days of Lent, Easter cuisine also includes hearty meat dishes. Special smoked sausages, so-called “Osterkrainer”, and ham in bread dough are in season for butchers during Holy Week. At Easter, of course, the Bogner butcher family also has many homemade specialties on the table after a busy week. Not just savory things, but also sweet things like the traditional Easter Pinzen.
For many people, the church consecration of food brought with them and the visit to the Easter grave is an important part of the preparation for the festival.
When Easter Sunday finally arrives, children’s eyes light up when the Easter Bunny’s hiding places are found in the grass. There is even a big Easter egg festival in the Radlberg district. And if you choose an Easter menu in the Rendl-Keller on Easter Sunday, you will get seasonal fish and wild garlic. For dessert, a strawberry cardinal slice with a touch of elderflower flavor is served.
