Vienna (OTS) The specialist in internal medicine, pulmonology and intensive care medicine Prim.a Priv.-Doz.in Dr. Marie-Kathrin Breyer, PhD (43) has been the new head of the since the beginning of the year LBI for lung health the Ludwig Boltzmann Society (LBG). At the Penzing Clinic in Vienna, she replaces her predecessor, University Professor Dr. Sylvia Hartl, MBA, who headed the LBI for around five years. The proven specialist in pulmonology has been working scientifically at the institute since 2012 and will continue to actively advance her research in her new role. The flagship project is Austria’s largest health study LEAD.

Lung Health: Research and Leadership

Breyer studied medicine at the University of Vienna and completed her PhD studies at Maastricht University. The specialist in internal medicine, pulmonology and intensive care medicine has been working at the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Lung Health since 2012 and was deputy director of the institute from 2021 to 2023. In addition to her new role as head of LBI, Marie-Kathrin Breyer has been head of the department for respiratory and lung diseases at the Penzing Clinic since 2023.

She supervises medical students at the Sigmund Freud Private University and the Medical University of Vienna in the preparation of their master’s and diploma theses. She is also a member of the European Respiratory Society (ERS) and the Austrian Pneumology Society (ASP).

The Viennese native has already published in various specialist media and is a founding member and scientific director of the LEAD study (Lung, hEart, sociAl, boDy), Austria’s largest observational study on lung health to date. The aim is to research the development of lung health over the entire lifespan, to find the causes and background of lung diseases and thus to open up new treatment methods for those affected in the future.
