Loud and wild: Maria Anna and Wolfgang Amadeus are “Mozart/Mozart”
Vienna (OTS) –

Filming for the new six-part ARD/ORF premium series “Mozart/Mozart” will begin in the Baltics in spring 2025: The focus is on Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s older sister: Maria Anna had just as big musical ambitions as her brother and had to pursue her career however, due to the prevailing gender norms, end early.

Stefanie Groiss-Horowitz (ORF program director): “In ‘Mozart/Mozart’ we approach the most important name in music history from a young and female side. The new series creates a modern, fast-paced and humorous highlight – through which we can also bring this millennial family closer to a streaming-savvy audience on ORF ON.”

Showrunner Andreas Gutzeit (Story House Pictures): “Maria Anna Mozart was forgotten by historiography. With ‘Mozart/Mozart’ we tell the life of a young woman who, under great threat, had to learn to rely on her own talent in order to be recognized. This insight is extremely relevant today, especially for a young audience. Our series is not a predictable biopic. ‘Mozart/Mozart’ is the exact opposite: loud, wild, told with a lot of fun and even more stirring music.”

Alexander Bickel (WDR fiction boss and chairman of the ARD joint editorial team for series in the main evening program): “We and our ARD partners are thrilled by this bluntly lively story about the famous siblings, in which the temperament and drive are reflected in Mozart’s compositions became the pop music of their time. A state-of-the-art historical series with which we have great hope of attracting a broad audience on the first and in the ARD media library.”

About the content: In “Mozart/Mozart” Maria Anna Mozart finally gets the stage she deserves. She is always in the shadow of her brother Wolfgang Amadeus. He’s the superstar. She is “just” his sister, although she is just as talented. However, when Amadeus crashes and can no longer perform, the entire financial future of the “Mozart Company” is suddenly at stake – and with it Maria Anna’s personal freedom. In order to save Amadeus’ career and herself, Maria Anna is forced to take on the role of her brother. She soon finds herself caught up in a web of royal intrigue, at the center of which is the man who falls head over heels in love with her: Antonio Salieri.

The fast-paced drama is produced by Story House Pictures in co-production with ARD (WDR/SWR/ARD Degeto Film), ORF and Bavaria Media as world distributor. The producers of the series are Jens Freels and Andreas Gutzeit, who also produced “Dignity” (JOYN) and four seasons of “Sisi” (RTL+). Andreas Gutzeit is also responsible as head author and showrunner. He wrote the scripts together with his co-author Swantje Oppermann (“Dignity”). Clara Zoë My-Linh von Arnim (“Druck”, “Die Zweiflers”) directs. The music concept for the series comes from Jessica De Rooij (“Sisi”). The producer is Simona Weber. The responsible ARD editors are Henrike Vieregge and Frank Tönsmann (leader, WDR), Brigitte Dithard (SWR) and Christoph Pellander (ARD Degeto Film). The responsible editors at ORF are Andrea Bogad-Radatz and Nina Fehrmann-Trautz.
