Free intestinal cancer will be possible in the future from the age of 45 – a significant progress for public health and early detection. The chamber for doctors in Vienna has been intensively committed to reducing the age limit for years – with success: Now this central claim has finally been implemented.
“Colon cancer is one of the most common, but also one of the most avoidable cancer. Every measure for earlier recognition saves life – this is why this decision is a clear signal for more health care and a strong sign for patients,” says Johannes Steinhart, President of the Chamber for Doctors in Vienna and the Austrian Chamber of Applied Sciences.
The new regulation should come into force on October 1, 2025. From this point on, two central free examinations are available to all insured persons: a colonoscopy every ten years and a stool test on invisible blood as part of the preventive examination.
Katayun Tonninger-Bahadori, endoscopy speaker in the chamber for doctors in Vienna and specialist for general and visceral surgery, has been committed to lowering the age limit for years. More than 90 percent of the cases arise from benign polyps that grow unnoticed over years and can be discovered and removed early by colonoscopy. The examination is practically pain -free, recognizes up to 100 percent of the preliminary stages and prevents cancer from being created at all. The fact that this life -saving measure is now available free of charge from 45 is a medically necessary and overdue step. ”
Naghme Kamaleyan-Schmied, Vice President and Curium Chairman of the Doctoral Doctors for Doctors in Vienna, underlines the health-political dimension: “This reduction in age is a health-political breakthrough-and shows what we can achieve as a chamber for doctors in Vienna when we have informed for our patients.
