A World Story Day is the opposite of a World History Day. And if there is world history, then history in which the unfinished looks up and a sudden moment vibrates: What if… Three words for the greatest, most devilish, bravest, most dance-like stories. In which things are on the brink and people, frightened or brave, face their fate. We love stories like that. The demonic and the lovely ones. In which we are allowed to live into possibilities that are actually denied us. Unfortunately. Or fortunately.
Oedipus and Hamlet remain acute beings. Sophocles and Shakespeare are contemporary authors – which simply means that there is no progress in art: the long-gone old is the eternally young. Yes, change the world! – but know about the limits that fundamentally remain inscribed in all existence; You can behave as left-wing or ironically as you like. Yes, stop! – but still dare to explore horizons that tempt you with new territory. We probably wouldn’t have gotten very far in evolution if we hadn’t warmed ourselves with illusions and ideas in addition to clothes.

Just look closely: The brave little tailor is wearing an explosive belt today: seven and more in one go. Woyzeck buys the peas he has to eat from Lidl. Kohlhaas is hoping for a truly new US president in Guantanamo. And Iphigenia, the exemplary one, lives quietly and unnoticed in the neighboring house. Once again, no one knows about her greatness and her courage. Meanwhile the Catilineas of this world are constantly getting interviews in “Spiegel”.
The confusion of life: It has to get dark so we can see the stars. And the fact that love is eternal is shown by the fact that every moment a love dies somewhere. Stories tell us: We are raw and pure at the same time. You are limited, but within you everything is conceivable. The good evil, the evil good. How does everything fit together? By fighting against each other: the sublime against the lowly, the deeply humanly honorable against the deeply humanly cruel. Never separated, but “intimately kneaded like dough” (Kleist), and what is noble is often a bigger lie than what is dirty. It’s less attractive anyway. That’s how people are.
