The “GAZA List – Voices Against Genocide” has successfully submitted election proposals in seven federal states. It is therefore on the ballot in large parts of Germany, with the exception of Carinthia and Salzburg. The opportunity to punish the government for its continued support of the genocide in Palestine was able to mobilize enormous energies. After the list achieved a breakthrough in Vienna, there was a “real storm on the magistrates and communities” in federal states, as one official put it.
The Gaza-born doctor and top candidate in Lower Austria, Shadi Abu Hence, addresses this as follows: “We stand up for basic human rights against a global system that is committing genocide under the title of Western values. The government divides while we unite people based on basic human morality. You don’t commit genocide. Now the hour for civil courage has struck.”
The lawyer Astrid Wagner justifies her candidacy with concern for the rule of law and fundamental rights: “Freedom of expression is one of the highest legal rights that we must defend,” while the Palestine activist with Jewish roots and co-founder of the “Not in our name” initiative , Dalia Sarig-Fellner says: “I’m running to make a contribution to making the anti-fascist ‘Never Again’ valid for all people, including the Palestinians.”
Willi Langthaler, one of the speakers for List GAZA, expresses what List GAZA stands for with its candidacy after this success: “We will not allow them to dismantle the basic elements of our constitution, freedom of expression and neutrality. We want to prevent the increasingly authoritarian rulers from entangling us in war and genocide. Not with us.”
