Vienna (OTS) – Are our democracies in danger? 2024 will be a great election year. Hundreds of millions of people will cast their votes this year – with bleak prospects. In many countries, populists, autocrats and opponents of democracy are pushing for power. In “Doc 1:
“Democracy in Danger,” Lisa Gadenstätter will examine the question of how endangered democracy actually is on Wednesday, May 15, 2024, at 8:15 p.m. on ORF 1.
More about the content:
In Hungary, Lisa Gadenstätter learns what happens when a democracy is gradually undermined by individual changes. In Saxony, she listens around in the AfD stronghold of Dippoldiswalde, a town where, for the first time in its history, a demonstration against right-wing extremism was launched to protect democracy – by two 17-year-old students. And she speaks to young people who vote for the AfD. In touching conversations with contemporary witnesses from Austria, Lisa Gadenstätter finds out how quickly a democracy can be destroyed and where this has led in extreme cases. Parallels to the present can be seen in their stories, which are classified by a historian and a democracy researcher. They say: Our early warning systems should sound, because the autocrats of today have one thing in common – their destruction of democracy follows a pattern that we know from the 1930s.
