May 8th is Liberation Day, the anniversary of May 8th, 1945, the unconditional surrender of the German Wehrmacht and thus the end of the Second World War in Europe and the liberation from National Socialism. Already on Thursday, Chancellor Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) and some black members of the federal government had attended a ceremony in Mauthausen liberation This was followed on Saturday evening by a joint celebration by the Mauthausen Memorial and the Gusen Memorial Service Committee at the site of the former Gusen concentration camp in Langenstein. At the already traditional “Festival of Joy” on the 8th, the highlight is the speech by contemporary witness Rosa Schneeberger.
