LG LAUNCHES GLOBAL “OPTIMISM YOUR FEED” CAMPAIGN FOR MORE BALANCE IN SOCIAL MEDIA

LG Electronics (LG) today launched a global campaign called “Optimism your feed,” designed to help users bring more optimism to their social media by encouraging them to proactively engage with positive and inspiring content in their feeds .

A new global survey commissioned by LG found that social media is both a source of anxiety and a place where people seek entertainment, stay connected with friends and family, and keep up with news and current events. According to the survey, nearly half of respondents (45%) say their social media feeds contain as much or more negative content as positive. One in four respondents (28%) said negative content on their social media increased their anxiety and one in five (20%) said it made them unhappy. Further studies also suggest that algorithms often promote negative and niche conversations.

The global survey sought to understand the triggers that influence how the algorithms work and how you can increase the amount of positive content in your feed. The result is the “Optimism your feed” playlist with original content that, when interacted with, attracts more optimistic content into the feed.* “Optimism your feed” is part of LG’s global campaign Life’s Goodlaunched last year to inspire and encourage people to approach life with an optimistic attitude.

The “Optimism your feed” playlist was created in collaboration with global influencers known for their optimistic influences, including Tina Choi, Victoria Browne, Josh Harmon and other. It contains over 20 short videos ranging from motivational to feel-good content.

LG also consults with social media experts like the professor Casey Fiesler, an information scientist and technology ethicist with a doctorate in human centered computing. Fiesler researches and teaches in the areas of technology ethics, internet policy, and online communities and has published on topics such as social media content moderation and recommendation systems. As a content author, she also educates the public about these topics.

Social media has become an integral part of our lives, and algorithms play an important role in the content we see in these areas. LG’s global playlist and campaign gives users the opportunity to see more positive and uplifting posts. By choosing more consciously what we engage in, we can bring more optimism, balance and happiness into our lives.

According to Fiesler, “Recommendation algorithms determine what we see on social media by predicting what content we are likely to engage with. These algorithms can therefore send us into increasingly specific niches – for better and for worse. Research shows that if left unchecked, users can quickly fall down negative rabbit holes and encounter harmful content. One of our first lines of defense must be to improve our digital literacy and pay more attention to how algorithms influence our online experiences. And the good news is that we have some control over the input to these algorithmic predictions; if we choose to engage with optimistic content, there’s a good chance we’ll see more of it.”
