Lebenshilfe Austria: The government’s new package of measures strengthens inclusion and participation

Package of measures enables pilot projects for an inclusive labor market and strengthens the rights of people with disabilities through secured financing and expanded powers

Vienna (OTS) Lebenshilfe Austria is pleased with yesterday’s decision by the federal government, which approved a comprehensive package of measures to support people with disabilities. With this package of measures, the federal government is taking an important step towards promoting inclusion and strengthening the rights of people with disabilities. It not only enables the implementation of pilot projects in the area of the inclusive labor market, but also strengthens the representation of the rights of people with disabilities through secure funding for the Austrian Disability Council (ÖBR) and expanding the powers of the disability lawyer.

Increasing the budget for inclusive projects to 50 million euros is a big step in the right direction. This allows important pilot projects to be implemented in the inclusive labor market that enable people with disabilities to switch to a self-determined working life with fair pay“, emphasizes the Secretary General of Lebenshilfe Austria, Philippe Narval.

Nevertheless, Lebenshilfe points out that Austria still has a lot of catching up to do when it comes to implementing the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UN-BRK). The last UN state report in 2023 made it clear that, among other things, there is a lack of sufficient measures in the education sector to ensure an inclusive education system across the board, and many people with disabilities continue to be disproportionately affected by unemployment or only receive pocket money in workshops instead of a fair wage receive.

Philippe Narval explains: “We welcome the Federal Government’s latest measures, but there is still a lot to do. The full implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities must finally become a top priority for all political decision-makers.
