Every year, director Daniel Kühnel “his” Lausitz Festival places a different motto that he calls “inspiration word”. This looks a bit of pseudo-original, more tries than really inspiring. We were confronted with “Anderselbst” and “in the demand” in previous years. This year the magic word is: “unscathed”. With the artistic program, with which the Brandenburg-Saxon border region is played in August and September, you now want to search for the unconscious-from a collective perspective. A neologically dressed general square, which every festival would claim.

In general, there is a lot of hope of emphasis, even of magical “three weeks”, which means the festival period. This certainly does not affect everyone and is in a certain contradiction to the mentality of the people in the same region, in which the spectacles are supposed to take place.

The multidisciplinary schedule is based – even that is hardly convincing – on various round anniversaries. Arvo Pärts 90th birthday, Kurt Weill’s 125th birthday and 75th anniversary of death, Heiner Müller’s 30th anniversary, Inge Müller’s 100th birthday as well as Thomas Mann’s 150th birthday and 50th anniversary of death dictate the program.

If you look at these – perhaps to superficial – criticisms, you discover some remarkable things that have succeeded in the artistic direction despite financial losses: Marcel Kohlers, including in the “ND”, staging of “Othello” from the previous year experienced a resumption. In the Louise briquette factory in Domsdorf’s briquette factory, Michael Sturminger, who recently was the “everyone” at the Salzburg Festival, will staged the Shakespeare sonet. In the Klettwitz open-cast mine, which was Heiner and Inge Müller for their work, the visitor mine F60 is played with a “inevitable, local, local station drama” about the love and work relationship between the two Müller- which would still be possible to exceed that one of the dramas was staged by their hand.

With the premiere of the family operator “Krabat” by composer Marius Felix Lange at the Gerhart-Hauptmann-Heater Görlitz-Zittau, the perhaps most important literary material of the Sorben is picked up in music theatrically. Finally, with Ute Lemper, a world star comes to Bautzen to give Kurt Weill the honor. The curatorial gigantomania of previous years that may not be wrongly criticized is therefore replaced by a delicate but ambitious offer for the audience. Good news for Lusatia.

The Lausitz Festival will take place in Brandenburg and Saxony from August 24th to September 14th.
