Salzburg (KAP) – With horror and the appeal “Stop this madness, all of you who are pushing the war!” the chairman of the Austrian Bishops’ Conference, Archbishop Franz Lackner, reacted to the most serious Russian attack on Ukraine to date. “Let us pray, let us act where we can – so that what Isaiah once wrote may become true and be true, and the heavens may not rain bombs and death, but rather the righteous,” emphasized the Salzburg Archbishop in a statement to Kathpress on Sunday.
“In these days, Christianity should prepare to receive the Prince of Peace; to prepare the way for him in a world that needs him,” Lackner continued. “Instead, we are receiving news of the heaviest bombing attacks that Russia has carried out on Ukraine since the beginning of the war.” If one were to remain indifferent in the face of this, “it couldn’t really be Christmas,” emphasized Lackner, who himself was able to experience the horrors and consequences of the war up close through conversations with those affected and a visit to Lviv last year.
In the worst attack since the start of the war, the Russian army fired almost 160 rockets, cruise missiles and drones of various types at the neighboring country on Friday, according to official information from Kiev. As a result, more than 30 people were killed and around 160 injured in several regions of Ukraine shortly before the New Year. The Ukrainian leadership spoke of terror against the civilian population.
