St. Pölten (OTS) – Not everywhere that says “Austria” has Austria in it. This is what the Austrian fruit and vegetable industry association, or ÖBOG for short, discovered during an investigation. The survey showed that, for example, when it comes to pickle cucumbers in local supermarkets, only around 26 percent of the products actually come from Austria. The situation is similar with strawberry jams. During ÖBOG inspections last November, out of 40 products offered in stores, only two jams were found to have fruit origins in Austria.
The industry association is therefore fighting for better labeling of the products. In the interests of consumers and also producing companies. “Land and People” visited two companies in Upper Austria that produce strawberry jams and pickles. They would welcome further development of the origin information and information on food, as is the case with animal products, also for fruit and vegetables.
