Korosec: Violence against older people is a problem for society as a whole that we must combat!

President of the Senior Citizens’ Association is committed to increasing awareness and expanding measures to prevent violence against older people

Vienna (OTS) Violence against older people remains an often ignored and taboo topic in social debates. “Violence in any form is unacceptable, but it is particularly tragic when it affects older people who often do not know how to help themselves,” emphasizes Ingrid Korosec, President of the Senior Citizens’ Association. Women often suffer particularly from physical and psychological violence as well as social isolation, often at the hands of their own life partners. “The shame and lack of contact points prevent those affected from seeking help. We can only break this vicious circle through targeted sensitization and education,” explains Korosec in the run-up to World Day Against Violence Against Elderly on June 15th.

Ingrid Korosec points out that violence can take many forms: “In addition to the obvious physical violence, there are also more subtle forms such as neglect, degrading treatment and disrespectful communication, which are just as serious.” In addition, violence against older people, for example by overburdened caring relatives, can have a tragic consequence. Korosec is therefore committed to additional support as part of the care reform: “We urgently need the further expansion of mobile services, day centers and professional care offerings that are affordable everywhere.”

The President not only calls for an improvement in protection against violence and more intensive preventive measures with a special focus on older people, but also more efforts to raise awareness across society. “A life free of violence is a fundamental right – regardless of age. Only with comprehensive awareness can we break the spiral of violence. We must remember: the way we treat older people today sets the standard for our own future,” concluded Korosec.
