After the coalition negotiations between the ÖVP and SPÖ were broken off and the subsequently announced – long overdue – resignation of ÖVP Chancellor Nehammer stood for FPÖ federal party chairman Club Chairman NAbg. Herbert Kickl states: “With Nehammer, Babler and Van der Bellen also failed. They were the architects of the loser traffic light and are now faced with the rubble of their Kickl prevention strategy. Instead of speed in forming a government, we now have three lost months, instead of stability we have chaos.
Karl Nehammer “experimented with the full support of the ÖVP leadership at the expense of Austria, just to be able to keep his job. The entire ÖVP therefore also shares responsibility. Nehammer’s resignation is logical, but much too late,” said Kickl, who also suggested that the failed SPÖ leader Babler should resign.
The FPÖ federal party chairman described the personnel decision within the ÖVP regarding succession as a litmus test: “We will see whether the People’s Party has at least now partially understood the power of the voters in the National Council election.”
Finally, Herbert Kickl looked towards the Hofburg: “Alexander Van der Bellen has a significant share of responsibility for the chaos that has arisen and the time lost. He can’t push that away. He is under pressure after today’s events.”
