Katharina Schmidt nominated as the new editor-in-chief of the Wiener Zeitung

Sebastian Pumberger and Aleksandra Tulej appointed deputy editors-in-chief

Vienna (OTS) The public tender for the editorial management of the Wiener Zeitung (WZ) has been successfully completed: In a multi-stage selection process involving the WZ editorial team, Katharina Schmidt was able to prevail against 55 other applicants. Schmidt will take over the position of editor-in-chief as soon as the editorial team has voted on the personnel according to the statute. She has already managed the medium on an interim basis in a dual leadership role together with Sebastian Pumberger. In the future, Pumberger will act as Schmidt’s deputy together with Aleksandra Tulej, the previous editor-in-chief of the magazine “Biber”.

Katharina Schmidt, born in 1983, has been working in various roles for the Wiener Zeitung since 2004 and was most recently responsible for product development for the new WZ.

New deputy editor-in-chief

Sebastian Pumberger and Aleksandra Tulej will be the deputy editors-in-chief of the Wiener Zeitung. Sebastian Pumberger joined the team at the new Wiener Zeitung in July 2023 as deputy editor-in-chief.

Aleksandra Tulej, former editor-in-chief at Biber, will join the team from January 15th. Her previous work brings valuable experience in media appearances and in the creation of comprehensive reports at home and abroad. Tulei: “I’m really looking forward to strengthening the WZ team, helping to shape the editorial team with a passion for socially relevant journalism and advancing the WZ with new perspectives.

Multi-stage process and ordering by editorial team

The multi-stage selection process with a total of 56 applicants was accompanied by a personnel consultant. The six top-ranked candidates were interviewed in a committee hearing shortly before Christmas. According to the editorial statutes, the candidate Katharina Schmidt ranked highest after the hearing must still be confirmed by the editorial team of the Wiener Zeitung.
