Karl Mahrer: Personal words about aggression and violence in connection with the Vienna Festival

Vienna (OTS) I am for freedom of culture. But I would also like to express my personal opinion on developments at the Vienna Festival Weeks on the occasion of today’s “celebratory” opening.

In connection with the Vienna Festival, we see that far too little is being done by those politically responsible in the SPÖ to combat increasing tendencies of anti-Semitism, aggression and violence. With the support of the city of Vienna and thus the taxpayers, this year’s festival will provide a comprehensive stage for anti-Semitic, aggressive and extremist views.

Artistic freedom is important and right. Art should also awaken people and draw attention to possible questions and problems in our society. In the last few days and also in the hours of the opening, I spoke to many people who, like me, are of the same opinion: We don’t need posters calling for revolution and a “Free Republic of Vienna” from masked people. Musical performances with statements like “I’ll kill you all, I’ll kill you all” at the opening ceremony on Town Hall Square, immediately after the assassination attempt on the Slovak Prime Minister, are frightening.

I am sure that I represent the opinion of many people when I clearly identify and firmly reject such excesses. Especially in view of increasing aggression in politics and the increasing polarization of society, we should remember to work together rationally and with responsibility for the Republic of Austria.
