Jungwirth | Green economy: “Kocher’s abstention is like an indictment”

EU supply chain law: success despite blockages

Vienna (OTS) After several attempts, a majority was finally found today for an EU-wide supply chain law. The EU directive makes it possible to create fairness by making the origin of a product and the underlying working conditions in manufacturing and production transparent. The resolution of the EU Supply Chain Act laid the foundation for the structural fight against child labor and exploitation of the environment and nature.

Sabine Jungwirth, federal spokeswoman for the Green Economy: “The law primarily contains requirements that affect large corporations. The EU Supply Chain Act has also been a success in terms of competitive fairness and has strengthened SMEs in Austria.”

In addition to Germany, Austria also abstained from the vote. This abstention by Austria amounts to a “no” in the vote.

Nevertheless, there is reason to be happy: “Although a watered-down supply chain law was passed today, it is still an important first step towards more transparency and fairness in international supply chains. For companies that already operate sustainably and regionally, this leads to a better position in competition with cheap production from abroad,” says Jungwirth.
