From February 28, 2024 in District Museum 8: “The life of the writer Lore Segal”
Vienna (OTS) – The successful exiled writer Lore Segal (born 1928), née Groszmann, once lived in Josefstadt, was brought to England in December 1938 on one of the first transports of Jewish children and was thus saved from the National Socialists. After completing her studies (English literature), Segal moved to her family in the Dominican Republic in 1948 and finally to New York in 1951. The teacher at US universities and author of novels, short stories, children’s books, translations and texts for magazines has received several awards for her work. From Wednesday, February 28, 2024, to Sunday, January 26, 2025, a special exhibition in the Josefstadt District Museum (8th, Schmidgasse 18) provides information about Segal’s eventful life and literary work. The museum is open Wednesday (6 p.m. to 8 p.m.) and Sunday (10 a.m. to 12 p.m.). Entry is free. Providing information: Telephone 01/403 64 15 (Director: Maria Ettl), email bm1080@bezirksmuseum.at.
The opening of the new special exhibition with the title “I wanted to love Vienna, but I didn’t dare. The life of the writer Lore Segal” will be held on Wednesday, February 28th at 7 p.m. by Josefstadt district leader Martin Fabisch. Rudolf Scholten (Federal Minister off duty) and Karin Hanta (curator) speak introductory words. Museum director Maria Ettl welcomes the visitors. The 95-year-old author addresses the audience as part of a “live broadcast”. Admission to the opening event is free.
Curator Karin Hanta developed the concept for the exhibition in close collaboration with Lore Segal. The exhibits range from a mother’s diary and letters from relatives during the Nazi era to photographs and works of art from the writer’s private archive. The project is about cultivating the culture of remembrance. Five partners support the show: City of Vienna Culture, Josefstadt District, Future Fund of the Republic of Austria, Jewish Welcome Service Vienna, Middlebury Gender Studies Program. A 40-page brochure rounds off the exhibition. The publication is available at the museum for a donation of four euros. Information on the Internet: www.bezirksmuseum.at.
