Johanniter on the “World Humanitarian Day”

Johanniter on the “World Humanitarian Day”
Vienna (OTS) –

“On the occasion of World Humanitarian Aid Day on August 19th, I would like to take the opportunity to pay tribute to all those who save lives around the world every day and give hope to people in need,” emphasizes Johannes Bucher, President of the Johanniter in Austria. Humanitarian aid means helping those in need in difficult situations – be it natural disasters, conflicts or humanitarian crises. “The commitment and willingness to sacrifice of these helpers, who often work on a voluntary basis, is admirable and deserves the highest respect and recognition,” said Bucher.

Aid organizations like the Johanniter depend on this selfless voluntary commitment and would otherwise not be able to provide their services in the service of the general public and in the spirit of humanity. Bucher: “More than half of our employees work on a voluntary basis – from the rescue service to nursing, care for the homeless and refugees, the rescue dog teams to the disaster relief teams that provide medical care and emergency accommodation at home and abroad after earthquakes, mudslides or floods , clean water and reconstruction aid to support people in greatest need.”

Over 300 million people worldwide are dependent on humanitarian aid. In times of growing global challenges, it is therefore more important than ever, says Bucher, “to stand together and act in solidarity and promote the principles of humanity. It is worrying that the global increase in crises and armed conflicts puts humanitarian workers themselves at greater and greater risk.”

On World Humanitarian Day, it is important not only to recognize the tireless efforts of those helping, but also to call on society to support their efforts. “Everyone can contribute by donating, volunteering or spreading awareness about humanitarian causes. Together we can help make the world a better and safer place,” concluded Bucher.
