Joghurts from soy and oats three times as climate -friendly as those from cow’s milk

Joghurts from soy and oats three times as climate -friendly as those from cow’s milk
Vienna (OTS) –

Greenpeace took a close look at the supermarkets in the supermarket at a market check in the cow’s milk and on a plant base and rated the ranges according to ecological criteria. The result: Almost half of the purely vegetable yoghurts are organic, with milk products it is only 27 percent. The vegetable yoghurts can score with the climate effects: yogurts made of soy and oats cause only a third of the climate footprint from animal ingredients. There is only cow’s milk yogurt in environmentally friendly reusable glass. First place in comparing the ranges at the market check.

Sebastian Theissing-Matei, agricultural expert at Greenpeace: “For our environment and the climate, a yogurt of soy or oats is a significantly better choice than one made of cow milk. Anyone who relies on organic products makes the most sustainable decision. Unfortunately, there are no vegetable yogurts in environmentally friendly reusable glass. ”

Eating more vegetable food is a contribution to climate protection – even with natural yogurt. The selection in the supermarkets is available: more than half of the vegetable products consists of soy, about 20 percent each are oats and coconut, the rest of almonds. Half comes at oats, about a quarter of Austrian agriculture and otherwise mostly from the EU. Fortunately, the soybeans come from Austria exclusively from Austria for all biologically produced soy yoghurts. The best choice for humans, animals and climate are environmentally friendly organic food. In terms of genetically modified soy is not allowed here in the feed trough. With one exception, the conventional Joghurts made of cow’s milk at the market check was confirmed that no soy from genetic engineering was fed: only the food company Danone was unable to confirm confirmation of genetic engineering-free feeding.

Greenpeace sees the need for improvement in packaging because the yoghurts from soy, oats and Co. are not available in the refillable glass. Reusable glasses and bottles can be refilled about 40 times. Unfortunately, the environmentally friendly reusable glasses in the conventional Austrian supermarket chains are currently only available from Kuhmilch across Austria. Here the manufacturers and the trade have to work for a broad reusable offer. “When purchasing yogurt, it must be possible in all supermarkets to use the reusable reusable glass. That is not the case at the moment. Greenpeace calls for the freedom of choice for the packaging on the yogurt shelf, ”said Theissing-Matei.
