All of this is a bit too exaggerated, but in contrast to Ivy and Theo, which act quite credibly, the constellation works quite well. Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch have been friends for years, but have never played together. The chemistry between the two is right. While Colman aka Ivy chats the worst meanness with a sharp tongue with great ease, Cumberbatch mimics the breastfeeding thinker, who smiths rather perfidious plans to sabotage Ivy’s success.
Ultimately, like in the old template, they fight like children who run around their favorite toys. Both want the house by the sea in which Theo’s whole ego is. The timelessly beautiful villa, from Production designer Mark Ricker in Scandinavian style in simple colors and natural materials, gives space for a large spectacle. It is a matter of honor that a chandelier will crash off the ceiling. But until the time comes, many small taunts, carelessness and malice are needed and that is a lot of fun.
