For the current event: The past winter was very dry and low in snow in Austria, especially in the east of the country. This is a direct consequence of climate change. It is high time to take measures to secure the entire water management sustainably – from drinking water supply to the protection of water to flood management and climate -wide wastewater management. Therefore have Fee (Austrian association for the gas and water subject) and Öwav (Austrian water and waste management association) Because of its well-founded expert: interior knowledge “Water vision 2100” Developed to ensure security with water for the future.
Challenges and necessary measures
Daring time, more frequent heavy rain and the long -term securing of water supply require rapid action and sustainable investments. This can only succeed in cooperation with the federal government, the federal states and communities. The government program “Do the right thing now. For Austria ”(2025-2029) laid a good cornerstone for a future-oriented water strategy.
The “Water Vision 2100” goals and measures
Water is a limited resource that is increasingly threatened by climate change and human interventions. The “Water Vision 2100” pursues the goal of sustainably securing the water supply by 2100. This includes ensuring a stable water supply, the protection of water as well as the renaturation of rivers and wetlands and an adaptation to climate change. These measures strengthen resilience to extreme weather events.
Innovations and sustainable solutions
Austria is intended to take on a leading role in water management through innovative technologies and the use of renewable energies. This includes the development of new procedures for wastewater treatment and recovery of phosphorus. In addition, the infrastructure for drinking water and waste water must be modernized in order to meet the highest standards.
Awareness and participation of the population
A central element of the strategy is the awareness of the population for the value of water. Responsible handling of water can only be achieved through education and transparent communication. Conflicts between different usage concepts, such as hydropower and biodiversity, are to be solved through integrative solutions.
Green jobs and international cooperation
In addition to the ecological goals, the “Water Vision 2100” also focuses on the creation of green jobs and increased international cooperation to develop global solutions for water use.

Fee
The Austrian association for the gas and water subject (ÖVGW) is the only independent and voluntary advocacy for the Austrian drinking water suppliers. It counts over 301 companies from the water sector as its members. The ÖVGW represents more than 2,000 water suppliers through cooperation with state associations. These supply around 80% of the centrally supplied population with drinking water. The Austrian drinking water is obtained 100 % of groundwater (fountains and sources), which largely does not have to be prepared. For the ÖVGW, the protection of the groundwater and the safe supply of the population with healthy, high -quality drinking water is therefore in the focus of climate change.
Öwav
The Austrian Water and Waste Management Association (ÖWAV) has represented the entirety of water and waste management in Austria since 1909. As a non -profit organization, he is committed to achieving the sustainable goals at national and international level. The most important tasks of the association include the creation of the ÖWAV regulation through work committees, the needs of practice based on the needs of practice as well as information and public relations. The ÖWAV offers its over 3,000 member organizations a industry network, a neutral and independent platform of all subject experts: inside and involved professional groups as well as current information and the compensation for interests in national water, sewage and waste management.
