International Women’s Day 2024: Empowering girls through education

For a strong future – Salesians of Don Bosco support education and girls’ protection programs

Vienna (OTS) On the occasion of International Women’s Day on March 8th, Don Bosco Mission Austria is calling to strengthen the education of girls worldwide. Looking at the frightening figures – 130 million girls have no access to education – Brother Günter Mayer SDB, Managing Director of Don Bosco Mission Austria, emphasizes the urgent need to counteract this situation.

“Girls who cannot attend school run the risk of being married as children, becoming ill and dying younger.”, explains Br. Günter Mayer SDB. Education is not only a basic human right, but also the key to change and the economic development of entire nations.

The Salesians of Don Bosco are committed to creating educational opportunities in countries of the South. Many of these regions lack schools, infrastructure and jobs, and many young people live in poverty with no prospect of a better future. Girls who have been victims of violence are particularly affected.

In the Don Bosco centers, girls can learn in a safe environment and receive comprehensive care. “We are committed to giving girls a way out of poverty by offering them a solid education”emphasizes Br. Günter Mayer.

A good education for women has long-term positive effects on society as a whole. It not only contributes to individual self-determination, but also to the economic development of a country.

Don Bosco Mission Austria calls for everyone to work together to educate girls in order to make a significant contribution to promoting a fair and equal world.
