Focus on cooperation against migration and external border protection – Germany and Austria confirm plans for deportations to Afghanistan
Vienna (OTS) – Interior Minister Gerhard Karner met the German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser and the Polish Interior Minister Tomasz Siemoniak for working discussions in Berlin on July 21, 2024. Topics included close cooperation in the fight against illegal migration. The focus was particularly on the implementation of the EU Asylum and Migration Pact as well as external border protection, the fight against the instrumentalization of migration by countries such as Russia and cooperation with third countries.
Interior Minister Gerhard Karner: “Germany and Austria work closely together in the area of security, as shown by the deployment of more than 40 police officers at the European Football Championship. I therefore welcome the German initiative all the more to deport Afghans who have committed serious crimes and who completely abuse the protection that has been granted to them in Europe. I started the discussion about this with the European interior ministers in Brussels. In Germany we have gained a strong partner for this important project.”
Like Austria, Poland is part of the initiative of 15 EU member states, which in a letter to the EU Commission are calling for new opportunities for cooperation with third countries. Interior Minister Karner and the German Interior Minister Faeser also want to continue to work closely together on the issue of deportations to Afghanistan. The ministers then met the Austrian police officers who are on duty at the European Championship game between Austria and Poland.
