Interior Minister Gerhard Karner handed over the 15 millionth security passport

Young woman from Waldviertel receives “anniversary pass” – burgundy travel companion stands for successful cross-departmental cooperation

Vienna (OTS) Barbara Reiberger, architect from Limberg (municipality of Schweiggers in the Zwettl district), is the owner of the 15 millionth security passport. Interior Minister Gerhard Karner presented the young woman from the Waldviertel with the anniversary passport in June 2024. “The Austrian passport is a safe and reliable companion for all Austrians at home and abroad,” said the Interior Minister at the handover.

The biometric security passport was introduced in 2006 and is one of the safest and most modern identity documents in the world. The newly designed generation of Austrian passports offers maximum protection against counterfeiting and manipulation and has been in use since the end of 2023. The passport is equipped with a polycarbonate data page and numerous security features such as a laser perforation image and laser tilt image. There is also a digital testing option via app.

Apply for a new passport in good time

The cooperation between the Ministry of the Interior and the State Printing Office is a model example of comprehensive cooperation in the interests of Austrian citizens and is characterized by its high level of efficiency and professionalism: The waiting times for new documents are – especially in international comparison – very short. Nevertheless, it is important to take a look at the expiry date of your passport before you travel so that you can extend it in good time before the start of your vacation if necessary.

You can apply for a passport at any Austrian passport authority (magistrate or district administration), regardless of your place of residence. For more information about reissuing a passport, please visit the link below.
